9 On-Page SEO Techniques to help Improve your SEO Ranking.
How can you get Google to pick your website from the millions of websites that already exist? This brings us to the concept of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). To understand better, let us first understand how Google works.
How Google Works?
Google works on a complex mathematical algorithm that functions using Google Bots.
What do these Bots do?
They gather information from websites by crawling and indexing.
Crawling: Google Bots scan (crawl) the web pages and collect information. They use links and keywords to navigate and pick relevant data.
Indexing: Indexes (Databases) are created through this process. Each index contains information on all the websites Google was able to find. While Indexing the bot inspects the keywords and their locations on a page. Title tags and ALT attributes are also analyzed.
To make Google understand your website better, you need to place keywords and links relevant to your business on your web pages.
Coming back to SEO. There are two broad categories into which you can channelize the efforts, they are On- Page and Off- Page.
In this article let us look at the On-Page SEO techniques.
On-Page SEO: As the name suggests, these are the things that you can put in place on your web page. This is a sure shot technique as all the changes are on your website, and very much under your control.
Page Titles: Page titles is one of the important SEO factors. Make sure the titles of the web pages are unique and start with the main keyword. This way you are creating relevance for Google to rank the website. Also adding modifiers like “Best Selling”, “Most preferred”, helps to create long tail keywords.
Eg: If the web page is about vodka, it is important to include the words “ Vodka Brands” in your title. For better chances of discovery include modifiers such as,"Top 5 Vodka Brands”, or Top 5 Best Selling Vodkas.
SEO friendly URLs: URLs that are short and rich with keywords rank better than others. The placement of the keywords also matters. To understand better take a look at the below example.
Eg: www.site.com/keyword would perform better than www.site/123786/subcategory/artciletitle.
Meta Descriptions: This is an HTML tag that provides a concise description of a page. If the meta descriptions have the searched-for keyword, it shows up in the search results. So, ensure the meta descriptions have relevant content with the primary keywords.
Tags (H1, H2, H3, etc.): The CMS codes of the website have tags for headlines. Web crawlers use these tags to differentiate important content. Make sure the headline is relevant to the content and has the keywords. Add the main heading of your article/blog to the H1 tag, and the consecutive titles to the tags H2, H3…etc.,
Multimedia Content: Google treats multimedia content (Videos, Images, gif's) as text. So, unless you add text to such content, it cannot recognize the relevance. It is a good practice to include the keywords in the name of the images. Using ALT text and image descriptions also help.
Content: Content plays a major role in SEO. Google ranks those websites that have fresh and relevant content. Have a content strategy in place and upload articles/blogs as scheduled. The content must be well researched, original with no grammatical errors.
